Bistatic Radar Imaging of the Marine Environment - Part I: Theoretical Background
نویسندگان
چکیده
We describe in detail the theoretical and practical implementation aspects of a simulation for marine radars which can, in particular, be used in multistatic configurations. Since the simulator is intended to deliver pseudo-raw signals, it can be used later as a tool to benchmark and improve post-processing algorithms such as bistatic synthetic aperture radar focusing algorithms and ship wake detection algorithms. The work is divided into two parts. This paper reviews and recalls theoretical prerequisites necessary for implementing such a simulator. Included are the full derivation of the bistatic radar equation from the transmitter to the receiver, accounting also for the transmitreceive time, a description of the sea state phenomenology, a review of the theory of electromagnetic scattering from the sea surface and the presentation and validation of the method used in the simulation. A companion paper discusses the practical implementation aspects of the simulator as well as an analysis of our results.

Bistatic Radar Imaging of the Marine Environment - Part II: Simulation and Results Analysis
We present a bistatic, polarimetric and real aperture Marine Radar Simulator (MaRS) producing pseudo-raw radar signal. The simulation takes the main elements of the environment into account (sea temperature, salinity, wind speed). Realistic sea surfaces are generated using a two-scales model on a semi-deterministic basis, so as to be able to incorporate the presence of ship wakes. Then, the rad...
متن کاملAdvances in Bistatic Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (Invited Session on Advances in Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar)
Bistatic geometries are enabled in scenarios where multiple separated transmitters and receivers are employed as well as when illuminators of opportunity are exploited. Bistatic Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (B-ISAR) becomes the radar imaging tool for obtaining non-cooperative target images in arbitrary bistatic configurations. Theoretical aspects and real data experiments have been conducte...
متن کاملInvestigating Possible Bistatic Configurations for Ship Wake Imaging through Simulation
We consider the context of marine surveillance and ocean imaging with bistatic radar. Since these systems are not yet mainstream and somewhat costly, not much experience has been accumulated yet in the literature and their usefulness is still under debate. We propose an approach to find potentially interesting bistatic configurations that could be used in the future to monitor the ocean, and es...
متن کاملImaging Analysis of Space Target in Bistatic ISAR
Abstract. Bistatic angle is an important characteristic parameter of bistatic inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR), which is different from monostatic ISAR. Based on the echo model of bistatic ISAR, the impact of time-varying bistatic angle to imaging plane and quality is analyzed. The image distortion mechanism is studied and the distortion angle is estimated. The simulation experiment veri...
متن کاملSignal Theoretical Aspects of Bistatic SAR
Bistatic SAR uses separated transmitter and receiver flying on different platforms. This configuration is envisaged to achieve benefits like the exploitation of additional information contained in the bistatic reflectivity of targets, reduced vulnerability in military systems or forward looking SAR imaging. The feasibility of the bistatic concept was already demonstrated by experimental investi...
